Description
Oglethorpe Day annually celebrates the lasting legacy of our university’s namesake, General James Edward Oglethorpe. A philanthropist, social reformer, member of Parliament and military leader, Oglethorpe was regarded as one of Britain’s most active 18th-century humanitarians. Oglethorpe Day is observed in February to commemorate the 1733 landing of Oglethorpe and the first colonists in Georgia. On this day, we are reminded of the motto of the colony’s trustees, Non sibi sed aliis (Not for self, but others).
To commemorate his legacy, each year the university welcomes a guest speaker to address a related topic. This year, Tina Fernandez, executive director of Achieve Atlanta, will be the featured speaker in the Conant Performing Art Center, following the Petrels of Fire race.
Following the presentation, witness the opening of Oglethorpe's time capsule!
